Nicki Minaj says the Democratic Party has become “petty and childish,” and she is putting the blame on its closeness with celebrities.

The rapper made the comments in a teaser clip for her interview with Lara Trump, which Fox News released Saturday morning ahead of the full conversation on My View With Lara Trump. Lara Trump is married to Donald Trump’s son Eric.
“I think the Democrats have gotten way too caught up in pop culture, for lack of a better term,” Nicki said. She went on to say the party has “allowed their relationships with artists to cause them to act like children and to be so petty and childish.”
She did not name a politician. She did not name an artist. She painted the whole party with one brush and left viewers to fill in the rest.
For anyone following Nicki Minaj over the past year, the list of likely targets is not long. In a May interview with TIME, she said Barack Obama’s political alliance with Jay Z came at a cost to her, adding that “lots of rappers don’t like Jay Z and were afraid to say it.” She has spent years accusing Jay Z and Roc Nation of hurting her career, and her move toward Trump has also played out alongside a very public back and forth with California Governor Gavin Newsom.
The Lara Trump sit down is the latest stop in what has become a full political rollout. In January, Nicki Minaj spoke at the White House during the Trump Accounts summit and called herself Trump’s “number one fan.” In July, Trump brought her out at a Rose Garden event and called her “a fantastic person.”
Just last week, on September 18, she appeared on Laura Ingraham’s Fox News show to promote the Small Business Administration’s Million Dollar Pitch Competition. The Small Business Administration is the federal agency that supports small business owners, and the competition had five entrepreneurs going head to head for a share of a $1 million prize. Nicki served as a judge alongside Grant Cardone and Airbnb cofounder Joe Gebbia.
“I am honored to be able to have an opportunity to work with this administration and to work with President Trump,” she told Ingraham. “He has inspired many people, not just me, and he’s fun.”
When Ingraham asked what she would say to people who criticize her for supporting Trump, Nicki kept it short: “Absolutely nothing.”
Fox is now promoting the Lara Trump interview with a “vote red” message aimed at young voters, and in the preview, Nicki tells viewers, “your voice is very necessary right now.”
That message comes with a question hanging over it. Nicki Minaj, who was born in Trinidad, has said in the past that she is not a U.S. citizen and could not vote. In January, she said she was finalizing her citizenship paperwork, but she has not publicly confirmed that the process is complete. As of now, it has not been verified whether she will be able to cast a ballot herself.
